GENERAL PROCEDURE FOR PERFORMING A HOT TAP (ACP OR PVC PIPE)
Any pipe insulation is removed from the main and the outside of the pipe is cleaned and prepped by the contractor.
A Hot Tapping Technician Chlorinates all pipe and machine fittings then installs the Tapping sleeve and valve to existing main and torques all bolts to approved specifications.
The tapping machine is bolted to the valve flange and the valve is opened. The operator then performs a pressure test on the assembly using CO2. The operator observes the pressure gauge and determines if there is any pressure loss. If pressure loss is shown, the leak must be found and repaired before a new pressure test can be performed. If no pressure loss is shown, the CO2 is bled off and the test connection on the tapping machine is plugged.
The tapping machine boring bar is manually fed through the valve until the pilot drill contacts the face of the water main.
Gearing on the tapping machine is engaged and the operator sets the required distance the shell cutter is to travel to complete the tap. The operator then installs the drill motor.
The drill motor is turned on and the tap is begun. The tapping machine automatically feeds the pilot drill and the shell cutter through the wall of the water main.
When the shell cutter has completed the cut, the operator disengages and shuts down the motor. He feeds the shell cutter in by hand to be sure the tap is complete.
The shell cutter is then retracted manually back through the valve and the valve is closed. The pressure in the tapping machine is released and the tapping machine is removed from the valve.
This completes the wet tap procedure and the outlet is ready.
